By the summer of 1696, James had become alarmed that negotiations for peace were to be held at Ryswick. Clearly he was of no further use to Louis XIV and this may indeed mean his expulsion from France. Under the terms he learnt that William was prepared to accept the young James as his heir so long as his father gave up all claim to the throne. None of these things could James ever do as, apart from anything, it would mean that his son would be brought up a Protestant.
