Elizabeth 1, Battle of Nieupoort, silver medal, 1600, by G. van Bijlaer, equestrian armoured figure of Prince Maurice right with battle scene to one side and fleet off the coast, in the field, 1600, rev. an aerial view of a fortified town, Fort St. Andrew, with an army on the outskirts, 55 mm, (MI. 174/171). The battle fought in present day Belgium was between the Dutch under Prince Maurice of Nassau, assisted by the British commanded by Sir Francis Vere and the Spanish led by Archduke Albert of Austria.Vere brought 1500 English troops.Of these 1500 English troops over 800 were killed or wounded, including Vere whilst the Spanish left 3000 dead on the battlefield.The battle was a significant victory for the allied forces.
This medal was struck in gold and silver for distribution amongst the officers of the States and of the Army according to their rank.
