Battle of La Hogue, white metal medal, 1692, by P. H. Muller, Neptune with raised trident drives Louis XIV from his marine car, a naval engagement in the distance. rev. Victory standing on an antique galley, with the sun setting over shipwrecks, with lettered chronogrommatic date, 49 mm, (MI55/251), a copper plug as always in the exergue. Minor surface pitting in a few places, otherwise extremely fine. £Sold
As with a number of medals of this time the allusion to the setting sun, (Louis' emblem) is a taunt. He like his fleet is sinking. This medal was also struck in wood as a draughtspiece.
