Assassination of Lord Mayo, Haymarket, Royal Italian Opera, Ivory Pass
Richard Southwell Bourke, (1822- 1872), politician.
The pass is contained in a contemporary black frame. Inside is a note stating that " Found on Lord Mayo's person at the time of his assassination. Given to me by Col. Napier Campbell, A. de C. to H.E.26th may 1872."
Lord Mayo had had a successful time as Chief Irish Secretary in Lord Derby's administration, handling the abortive Fenian Rising of 1867.
Subsequently when Disraeli became leader he was appointed Viceroy of India and in this capacity he visited the Andaman Islands. Long regarded as the dreaded penal colony of British India. Despite precautions to protect him he was stabbed to death at Port Blair on 9th February.
When in London, Lord Mayo was a regular subscriber to the Royal Italian Opera in the Haymarket and presumably the fact that he had this item with him at the time of his murder implies that he had been send the pass for the new season when he was in India.
Sold together with a carte de visit of lord mayo and two engravings.
