This society was the first established in England for the insurance of houses against fire. Initially it was called the Amicable and subsequently in 1720 was renamed the Hand in Hand Fire Office.
Although founded in 1696 this example appears to date from the third quarter of the eighteenth century, especially with the original red leather case.
