These medals were given as honorary rewards to those deemed deserving during the engagement. The English fleet under the command of the Duke of York, Prince Rupert and the Earl of Sandwich had inflicted a crushing defeat on the Dutch with nineteen ships captured or destroyed, this medal being used for those of the rank of captain and above.
However they were deliberately struck without date or particular design so the could be given "for any such enterprises."
