Founded in 1803 by the Society of Licensed Victuallers (now operating as the Licensed Trade Charity), the school was originally situated in Asylum Road, Kennington, London.
The foundation stone for the new school was laid by Lord Melbourne in 1836 and the school was formally opened the following year with Victoria agreeing to become the School's Patron, following on from William 1V.
