Sir Edward Banks (1770-1835), builder. He was employed by Sir John Rennie to work on the Lancaster and Ulverston canals. In 1801 he moved south to work on the Surrey Iron Railway and went into business with William Joliffe. Joliffe and Banks became the principal contractors for Public Works and built a number of important bridges, including Southwark, Waterloo and the New London Bridge. They also built dockyards, lighthouses and prisons. In 1824 they invested in a steam packet company and joined promoters of the General Steam Navigation Company. Banks was knighted in 1822.
