George Macintosh had been dispatched by the Earl of Mar across the Firth of Forth. He took Preston which he defended very vigorously but was ultimately reduced to an unconditional surrender on the same day as the Earl of Mar was defeated at Sheriffmuir. The legend on the reverse, which is often found on Roman coins, was an important expedient at the time of doubtful loyalty among the troops.
