Edinburgh, George Street, New Assembly Rooms,
The New Assembly Rooms were established in George Street in 1788. Walter Scott immortalised them in his novel "Redgauntlet". "A new Assembly room" responded the character Mr Maxwell, an old Jacobite laird, to the news of the new rooms in George Street, "umph - I mind quartering three hundred men in the old Assembly room .... But come, come, I'll ask no more questions - the answers all smell of new lords, new lands, and do but spoil my appetite, which were a pity, since here comes Mrs Crosbie to say our mutton's ready".'
Harriet Montagu, (1805 - 1857), Literary hostess and daughter of the sixth Earl of Sandwich. She was profoundly aristocratic in her opinions and had little time for the Baring family connections into which she had married. She established one of the most celebrated literary salons of her age and her looks were said to be rather more popular with men rather than women She particularly brought about the enmity of a number of literary wives, not least Thomas Carlyle's wife who commented on her death, "I sometimes think that she was an evil spirit. No malignant elf could have caused more misery."
