John Jennison (1793-1869), gardener who developed his own garden in Stockport and opened it to the public on summer Sundays. He added caged birds to the garden and slowly introduced animals. Jennison soon realised he needed extra space and bought some land in Manchester in 1837. After a difficult beginning, Jennison added a number of new innovations and the zoo and gardens at "Belle Vue" became increasingly popular and turned into a very profitable venture
