Mary Regent
Mary Regent, silver medal, 1691, by J. Smeltzing, bust of Queen Mary with hair tied up in pearls profile left, rev. a lioness, (Mary) at the mouth of a cave, in which there are three cubs tramples on snakes. The lion, (William) is departing, TE ABSENTE TUEBOR/ REGI REDUCI, ( I SHALL PROTECT THEM IN YOUR ABSENCE/ TO THE KING ON HIS RETURN, 38 mm, (M1. 1/152). Minor marks, otherwise good very fine and rare. £Sold
William departs from England leaving Mary, who assures he that she will protect her three cubs,(the three kingdoms), during his absence. William left for Holland in January 1691, leaving Kensington on 16th, the first time that he has returned to Holland since being appointed King.
