Memorial to Lord Dudley Stuart
Lord Dudley Coutts Stuart (1803-1854), advocate of the independence of Poland; four times Liberal MP for Arundel. Having met Prince Adam George Czartoryski on his visit to England in 1831, he was much moved by his accounts of the oppression of the Polish people by Czar Nicholas and became their chief exponent. This medal was distributed by Prince Czartoryski as a memorial to Stuart. Stratford Canning, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe (1786 – 1880), diplomat and ambassador and cousin of George Canning. He served as a diplomat principally in Constantinople but also Switzerland, USA, Russia and Spain. He was directly involved in the crisis which led to the Crimea War.
