Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881), Essayist and historian. This medal was struck by order of the subscribers to the Carlyle Birthday Memorial Fund.
Dr Robert Carruthers (1799-1878), journalist and writer. In 1828 he became editor and later proprietor of the Inverness Coourier. He edited Pope's works with memoir entitled "Life of Pope" in 1853 and, together with Robert Chambers, edited the first edition of "Chamber's Cyclopedia of English Literature" (1842-44). He later received the degree of LL.D from Edinburgh.
