Admiral Earl Howe and the Glorious First of June
Richard Earl Howe (1725-1799), Admiral. Having entered the navy at 14, he followed a distinguished career and was raised to an Earldom in 1788. At the outbreak of war with France in 1793, he was appointed to the command of the Channel Fleet and the following year gained the famous victory of the “Glorious First of June”. London was illuminated for three nights in honour of the victory. A subscription list for the medal was opened in July and subscribers names were entered at Mr Young’s, Goldsmith, Ludgate Street and at Mr Barnett’s, Cockspur Street amongst other addresses.
