William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland
William Augustus, (1721- 1765),third and youngest son of George 11. As the leading general of his day he took command of the campaign against the Young Pretender and inflicted the decisive defeat of the Jacobites at Culloden in 1746.
As a result he acquired the nickname "Sweet William" from his Whig friends and "Butcher" from his Tory enemies.
