Frederick Gye, (1780- 1869). printer. In partnership with Thomas Bish, they combined their printing business with that of lottery agent for which they were very successful. He had the added bonus of buying one lottery ticket which came up trumps earning him a prize of £30,000 which he ploughed back into his various business enterprises, investing in both the wine and tea trade. In 1821 Bish and Gye bought the lease of Vauxhall Gardens and in 1822 reopened under the title of "Royal Gardens, Vauxhall" with the approval of George IV.
Initially business at Vauxhall proved successful but as the years went by so trade declined and eventually the Gardens were sold, having accrued considerable debts leaving Gye a ruined man.
John Garratt,(1786- 1859), goldsmith, was elected Lord Mayor in 1824 and laid the first stone for the New London Bridge in 1825.
