Having been successful in 1828 at the Clare Election, the Government refused to allow O'Connell to take his seat because of his Catholic religion. Eventually Peel and Wellington persuaded George IV that the only way to prevent a rebellion was to allow him to take his seat and as a result the Catholic emancipation Act was passed, which allowed all religious non conformists to enter public life.
