George IV, Visit to Ireland
George IV set off on his eighteen-day tour of Ireland less than a month after his coronation and an even shorter time after the mysterious death of Queen Carline. By the time of her funeral he was already in Ireland with his new lover,Lady Conyngham, the mistress of Slane Castle, where he spent four nights during the tour.
Already in her mid-fifties and described as corpulent, the satirists and caricaturists had great fun at the expenses of the rotund couple.
Catholics expected the visit of George would hasten catholic emancipation and Daniel O'Connell was under a similar impression. In reality it took a further eight years with George extremely reluctant to sign.
