Wyon, diademed bust of Victoria left, rev. facade of the Guildhall, contained within glass lunettes with a silver band around and contemporary Wyon leather case, 55 mm (BHM 1775), Very slight discolouration at 12 o'clock on the reverse edge, otherwise practically mint state and extremely rare in this form and condition. £Sold
This William Wyon portrait of Queen Victoria was the one used as the bust on the Penny Black stamp.
The committee minute book records on 11th December that William Wyon was authorized to strike one example in gold for presentation to the Queen, 120 examples in silver and 350 in bronze. It is further recorded that ten mounted examples were presented, eight of them to members of the Royal family who attended the function. Presumably these examples, mounted within glass lunettes, are those referred to.
