The William Goldsmith Scholarship was set up with a donation of £1000. The annual award was £25 open to all boys under the age of sixteen.
William Goldsmith was a wine and spirit merchant of Parliament Street, London. He had been one of the founders and original governors of the school and died in 1885.
The gold prize which included an additional £5 gift was awarded for mathematics or modern languages. Silver prizes plus £2/10- were similarly given for boys under fourteen.
