Suffolk, Framlingham College, gold prize, (16 gr. ), circa 1867, a view of the College grounds and buildings, FRAMLINGHAM COLLEGE/ SUFFOLK, rev. a bird in the centre with inscribed ribbon below, GOLDSMITH MEDAL/ 1867/ -FORTIBUS FORTUNA FAVET, (FORTUNE FAVOURS THE BOLD), 27 x 22 mm. A test mark in the field on the reverse with minor surface marks, otherwise about extremely fine. £Sold
The William Goldsmith Scholarship was set up with a donation of £1000. The annual award was £25 open to all boys under the age of sixteen.
William Goldsmith was a wine and spirit merchant of Parliament Street, London. He had been one of the founders and original governors of the school and died in 1885.
The gold prize which included an additional £5 gift was awarded for mathematics or modern languages. Silver prizes plus £2/10- were similarly given for boys under fourteen.
