London, Newgate Street, Christ's Hospital, Marker's Badge
Grimshaw notes that from the sixteenth-century prefects or monitors were used by a number of public schools and grammar schools, with power over the other boys.
Samuel Pepys in a report drawn up concerning Christ's Hospital in 1682, advocated the institution of weekly monitors appointed by the Master to "observe the behaviour and decent apparel of the children, and they presume not to come before him with dirty hands etc to the disgrace of the government of the Foundation."
In 1755, the headmaster, the Rev.James Townley instituted the office of Marker for the two monitors in each ward who were appointed to hear the Scriptures read at Sides on Sundays. They wore a medal on Sundays and special days.
A number of goldsmiths were recorded as supplying these medals, including John Coleman and Pearce and Newton of Newgate Street. In 1765 the price paid for one of these was 7/- and in 1773 9/-.
