Darlington Election, "Purity of Election", printed linen banner, 1832, the central legend in five lines with border around, PEASE/ FREE AND UNBOUGHT/ ADVOCATE / OF A / FREE AND UNSOLD / PEOPLE/ PURITY OF ELECTION/ AGRICULTURE/ MINING/ COMMERCE, 680 x 680 mm, contained in a modern gilt frame. A small tear to the material around the word ADVOCATE, otherwise good very fine, with clear strong colour. £Sold
Joseph Pease (1799-1872), Railway projector and member of the famous Quaker family. As the first Quaker M.P., he refused to swear the usual oath. He was a significant figure in the Anti-Slavery movement prior to abolition. He was heavily involved in the project for the opening of the Stockton to Darlington Railway and the draft advertisement for the opening of the line in 1825 is in his name.
