Elkington & Co were founded by Josiah & George R. Elkington in the 1830s. They were pioneers in the electro-deposit process, being granted the patent in 1840. Manufacturing on a commercial scale they employed 2000 staff in 1887 to produce both table and ornamental ware, and statuary, at their Newhall Street premises. The many visitors to their extensive showrooms in Birmingham included Heads of State and Royalty who were asked to sign a Visitor's Book.
This plaque is an example of a piece that a visitor might gild at Elkington's and take away with them as a souvenir.
