BATHGATE ACADEMY/ INSTITUTED BY/ JOHN NEWLAND/ OF JAMAICA/ JEMIMA BRANKS/ DUX/ SESSION 1874-75, rev. armorial shield in the centre, a castle in the distance and woman with cildren in the foreground, Corporation of Daniel Stewart's Institution, 80 x 57 mm, with integral suspension in the form of a naval anchor, contained in original case. Slight damage to the case, otherwise good very fine. £Sold
Bathgate Academy was built in 1831. Designed by the Edinburgh architects R & R Dickson. It was endowed by John Newlands, a Jamaican plantation and slave owner.
It is interesting to see from the design and text of the medal that he was clearly proud of his Jamaican background.
