King's Theatre and Opera House, Haymarket
Pierre Francois Laporte (1799-1841), actor and manager of the "Italian Opera" at the King's Theatre and Her Majesty's Theatre from 1828 to 1831 and from 1833 to 1841. Laporte was immortalised in Tom Ingoldsby's ballad "A Row in an Omnibus (Box)" as "Doldrum the Manager". The ballad refers to the infamous "Tambruini Row" of 1841, when the members of the Omnibus box in the pit tier stormed the stage. They objected to Laporte's decision to replace the famous Baritone Tambruini with the new singer Coletti. The "Tamburini Row" led to the establishment of a rival Italian Opera at Covent Garden.
