Edinburgh, George Street, New Assembly Rooms,
The New Assembly Rooms were established in George Street in 1788. Walter Scott immortalised them in his novel "Redgauntlet". "A new Assembly room" responded the character Mr Maxwell, an old Jacobite laird, to the news of the new rooms in George Street, "umph - I mind quartering three hundred men in the old Assembly room .... But come, come, I'll ask no more questions - the answers all smell of new lords, new lands, and do but spoil my appetite, which were a pity, since here comes Mrs Crosbie to say our mutton's ready".'
