THE CEREMONIAL STONE OF THIS CHURCH WAS LAID ON FRIDAY THE 29 AUGUST 1823 IN THE FOURTH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF HIS MAJESTY GEORGE THE IV . BY THE RIGHT HONORABLE RICHARD WILLIAM PENN EARL HOWE LENGTH OF THE CHURCH 92 FEET BREADTH 64 FEET HEIGHT OF THE TOWER AND SPIRE 170 FEET . THE EXPENSE OF ERECTING THE CHURCH IS DEFRAYED BY HIS MAJESTYS COMMISSIONERS FOR BUILDING ADDITIONAL CHURCHES IN POPULOUS PARISHES AND THE SITE PURCHASED BY VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS . The building was completed in 1827 and destroyed by fire in 1911. It was rebuilt in 1912 by W. D. Caroe.
