Charles the Martyr, (Charles 1)
Charles the Martyr, (Charles 1), pastel portrait, circa 1750, half length figure of Charles 1 almost facing with hands raised, 370 x 300 mm, contained in contemporary gilt frame. Very fine. £495.00
Charles is shown with uplifted hands and is wearing his execution clothes.
The composition recalls the imagery of William Marshall's frontispiece to 'Eikon Basilike'.
It is likely that this was produced for the centenary of the execution.
