London Horticultural Society, Instituted 1804, Foundation Medal
John Townsend Aiton (1777-1851), was the younger son of William Aiton (1731-93), who in 1759 had been appointed the first curator of Kew Botanical Gardens and was the author of “Hortus Kewensis”. In 1804, John was appointed Royal Gardener at Windsor Castle where he was in charge of four kitchen gardens (supplying fruit to all London palaces), the pleasure grounds, flower gardens, and the Great Court lawns and walks. The gardens were so far apart that it took him half a day on horseback to inspect them. In 1830, at the bequest of William IV, John became the head gardener at Kensington Palace and St. James’s. He was one of the first 28 members of the Royal Horticutural Society, founded on 7th March 1804, his elder brother, William, who had taken over at Kew on the death of his father, being one of the founders of the Society, along with Sir Joseph Banks.
