Opening of the Grand Junction Railway
The railway in effect united the towns of Liverpool, Manchester, and Birmingham, with one terminus at Curzon Street Birmingham and the other at Newton where it joined the Liverpool and Manchester Railway. The Gentlemen's Magazine of 1837 p.80 records an inaugural journey in which "the engine was frequently propelled at a speed exceeding 35 miles an hour!
This volume goes on to give a full account of the opening of the railway, explaining the elegance and grand design of the first-class carriages, even the second class carriages are fully enclosed, although not the third class. Even a bed can be had for those who can afford the extra charge - one sovereign.
