Referred to as the chain pier due to the suspension chains which were used in the construction.It was originally intended as a landing stage for cross channel boats. However it very soon became popular for promenading.
It cost £30,000 to build from the design of Sir samuel Brown who devised an improved method of producing chain - links for ships cables which was also suitable for suspension bridges.
