Marriage of Princess Louise Margaret of Prussia and the Duke of Connaught,
The couple were married at the chapel of Windsor Castle and then continued for their honeymoon at Claremont. Princess Louise had arrived from the Netherlands in the Royal Yacht, Victoria and Albert.
On 13 March 1879, Princess Louise Margaret married Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught and Strathearn at St. Prince Arthur was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. The couple received a great number of expensive gifts; the Queen's gift consisted of a diamond tiara, a pearl and diamond pendant.
The Duke was commissioned in the Royal Engineers in 1868, he transferred to the Royal Artillery and in 1878 to the 7th Hussars. Commanded with distinction the 1st Brigade of Guards during the Egyptian campaign in 1882 and commanded the army in Bombay, 1896-90. He spent a career in the army, renouncing his succession, and also devoted much of his energy to horticulture and freemasonry. He was Governor-General of Canada from 1911 to 1916.
