John Campbell,2nd Duke of Argyle,(1678-1743), general and statesman. A significant military and political figure during the reign of Queen Anne, particularly in bringing about the Act of Union. Distinguished himself during the War of Spanish Succession and then in Spain.
In 1715 he was completely successful in suppressing the Jacobite rebellion. In 1718 he was appointed Duke of Greenwich.
