Joseph Priestley,(1733- 1804). Nonconformist theologian and chemist. Renowned for his "discovery" of oxygen in 1774. The previous year he was awarded the Copley medal for his "Observations on Different Kinds of Air. His opinions became increasingly radical and in 1791 his house was ransacked by the anti-revolutionary mob, with his books and scientific instruments being destroyed. He subsequently sought asylum in America.
