Francis Rawdon Hastings, first Marquis of Hastings, (1754- 1826).Governor General of Bengal 1813- 1823, a position which he acquired through his friendship with the Prince Regent.
His belligerent policies greatly extended the frontiers of British rule in India, and he and his wife Flora were at the centre of Calcutta society.
As Governor, Rawdon-Hastings supervised the victory of British troops in the Gurkha War, the final conquest of the Marathas, and the purchase of Singapore in 1819.
