With the illness of George 111 leaving him mentally incapacitated, the Prince Regent, who had an appalling relationship with his father, maneuvered to have a Regency. Fox seeing an opportunity to further his own ambitions aligned himself with the Prince. It was only George 111's sudden recovery from the illness that prevented the relationship from developing further.
