Paris, Place Vendome, Painted Snuff Box
The column in the centre was instigated by Napoleon following his success at the Battle of Austerlitz. Based on Trajan's Column,with bronze bas relief plates made from 250 melted down canon captured from the Austrian and Russian armies. This was completed in 1810. A statue of Napoleon by Chaudet was placed on top.
After the fall of Napoleon and his abdication in April 1814, the figure was removed to be replaced by the white Bourbon Royal Standard to signify the accession of Louis XV111.
The Chaudet figure of Napoleon eventually turned up at Willaim Bullock's exhibition of Napoleonica at the Egyptian Hall in Picadilly and was then sold to William Beckford for £33/12-.
