Thomas Denman
Ex. Mary Bate Collection. Previously on loan to the V & A. A label on the back reads- Leant by Mrs. Bate. No. 58.
Having previously defended the Luddites, Denman excelled at the trial of Queen Caroline in the House of Lords. Here he mounted a brilliant defence on a par with Lord Brougham, possibly better. As much of it was at the expense of George IV, George became his lifelong enemy.
In 1844 Denman successfully quashed a conviction against Daniel O'Connell for sedition. He served as Lord Chief Justice between 1832 and 1850.
This is one of four waxes that was issued at the time of Caroline's trial. The other figures represented were Lord Brougham, Lord Eldon and George IV.
