Thomas Coats (1809-83), thread manufacturer. Such was the success of his business that his home town of Paisley benefited from many of his endowments. The observatory depicted, was presented to the Paisley Philosophical Institution with sufficient funds to maintain a curator. Coats collection of Scottish coins and medals was presented to the Hunterian Museum in Glasgow, by the family.
