A note on the reverse reads “Mrs Mary Gibson, daughter of Joseph Smeaton the Engineer. She was a sponsor of John Henning and was foremost in persuading him to go to London to further his career as a modeller of portraits. Henning modelled this portrait at her home while he was visiting the family in 1810.” In the Paisley Museum Catalogue of 1977, entitled “John Henning 1771-1851”, another example of a portrait of Mary Dixon is illustrated. It refers to her as being the widow of Jeremiah Dixon.
