William Ewart Gladstone,(1809-1898), Politician and writer; Leader of the Liberal Party from 1867 and Prime Minister 1868-74, 1880-85, 1886, and 1892-94. Chancellor of the Exchequer 1852-1855, 1859-1865 and 1865-1866. An art collector himself, he supported museums and galleries by making money available during his time as Chancellor. He knew and was friendly with many of the key art world figures of the day: J.C. Robinson at the V & A, Charles Eastlake at the National Gallery, and Henry Layard. Also, Master of the Mint.
