London Bridge, turned wooden box, circa 1831, the lid bearing a silver plaque engraved in the centre with an arrow and Centrum Pete, with legend around This box was made of one of the piles on which Old London Bridge stood 656 yr, 110 x 48 mm. Good very fine. £Sold
The medieval London Bridge was built in 1209 and was the first stone bridge in the world. It had 20 massive arches, supported by 19 elm piles, and houses and shops were built along its length. Until 1750 it was the only crossing over the Thames in London and it stood for over 600 years until it was demolished in 1831.
