The medieval London Bridge was built in 1209 and was the first stone bridge in the world. It had 20 massive arches, supported by 19 elm piles, and houses and shops were built along its length. Until 1750 it was the only crossing over the Thames in London and it stood for over 600 years until it was demolished in 1831.
