George III Preserved from Assassination, , bronze gilt medal, 1800, by P. Kempson, a crown below rays within a wreath entwined with a ribbon inscribed, GOD GIVE PRAISE/ PRESERVED FROM ASSASSINATION/ MAY 15 1800, rev. an angel kneeling on a cloud holding a plaque bearing the portrait of the King and protecting it from an arrow by a shield, GOD SAVE THE KING, 38 mm (BHM 486). Extremely fine and rare in this metal. £Sold
On 15th May the Royal family visited Drury Lane. As the King entered his box and was bowing to the audience a Mr James Hadfield, a discharged soldier, stood up and fired a horse pistol at the Royal box. At the subsequent trial he was found not guilty, considered to be insane at the time of the attempt. He was sent to Bethlem Hospital where he died in 1841.
