A Group of Five Medieval Pewter Pilgrim and Secular Badges, , circa 1400, a group of five pewter badges, representing a swan named to the Bohun family. the hunting horn of St Hubert, a popinjay, a pascal lamb and the head of a King, 30- 50 mm. Generally very fine with some original toning. £Sold
All the badges were found in the river Thames and are in exceptional condition dating from the 14th and 15th centuries. Three retain their original pins. The popinjay is associated with the rhyme " popinjay, jolly May" this month being seen as the month of love. The swan was a symbol used by many noble families this being named BOHUN for one such family. The association that was intended was descent from the Knight of the Swan of medieval romance.The marriage of Mary, a Bohun heiress to John of Gaunt's son in 1380, (the future Henry IV) brought the badge into the royal house of Lancaster.
