The box contains a contemporary note circa 1785 .
"This filigree box with the knave of hearts/(Pam) in enamel on top was given by William Mitford oif Pitshill to his wife on the birth of his son Charles Mitford AD 1785 with 20 guineas in it. W. M.
"E'en mighjty Pam that kings and queens o'erthrew/ And mow'd down armies in the fights of Loo"

Pitshill is one of the most important houses of West Sussex. It is situated in Tilligton between Midhurst and Petworth. It was built for the Mitford family beginning in 1760.
