Opening of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway, white metal medal, 1830, by T. Halliday, bare head bust of George Stephenson left, GEO. STEPHENSON ESQ ENGINEER, rev. a locomotive and carriages passing over a viaduct, BRIDGE AT NEWTON/ LIVERPOOL & MANCHESTER/RAILWAY OPENED/ SEPT 15. 1830, 47 mm. (BHM. 1459). Some minor marks in thr fields, otherwise good very fine. £Sold
George Stephenson was surveyor of the company and later appointed engineeer.The line was officially opened on September 15th with the Rocket and another train used for the occassion. It was at this event that the M.P.William Huskisson was unfortunately run over and in the race to get him medical attention Stephenson personally took control of the Rocket breaking the then speed record and reaching an average speed of 36 miles per hour.
