The Royal Academy was founded in London in 1768 under the patronage of George III. The Academy awarded 10 gold and silver medals in December 1770. These were the first impressions from the new dies executed by Pingo.
The name of Matthew Shepperson has subsequently become more well known following his effects being offered at auction in the recent past. One particular portrait which was attributed to him was subsequently recognised as a missing Velasquez, and sold for £3000,000.He had collected portraits in the 1820's. This medal was part of the same property.
